Lopers Get Sunday Morning & Afternoon Wins in Missouri

Keanrey, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams moved indoors on Sunday with the 12th-ranked women rallying past Missouri Western State, 4-3, in St. Joseph and the 36th-ranked men beating William Jewell, 5-2, in Liberty.

The women improve to 12-3 (2-0 MIAA) while the men are now 8-12.

Early Sunday at William Jewel (6-7), the Lopers got out to a 1-0 lead by allowing just four combined points at one and three doubles. Sophomores Jakub Strzelecki (Poland and Andy Brisdon (U.K.) were at three with freshman Ivan Melnik (Germany) and Adrian Constantin (Romania) in the top spot.

While the Cardinals won at one singles, UNK took two through five in straight sets with six going unfinished. Brisdon was dominant at four (-1, -1) with Melnik eventually rolling at two (-5, -0).

Up the road and in the afternoon the UNK women had to rally from a 3-1 hole for a second consecutive day. The dual was held on three courts with doubles followed by one through three singles and then four through six.

That Griffons (3-6, 0-2) took the doubles point thanks to a 6-1 win at one and a 7-6 (-6) decision at two. They then got closer to clinching after winning in three sets at both one and three. However, like they did on Saturday at Northwest Missouri State, the trip of sophomore Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe), Masha Hatouka (Belarus) and Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) each won to give the dual to the Lopers. There wasn't too much drama as Hatouka (-1, -0) and Plachy (-1, -0) rolled at five and six with Midzi (-2, -3) having to work a bit harder to clinch. Finally, senior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) scored the other point thanks to a three-set win at two (-3, 2-6, -4)

UNK returns home next weekend to face Emporia State and Washburn.
