Late Shots His Metal as Lopers Fall to Sioux Falls, 1-0

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Addison Van Zee scored in the 37th minute and a flurry of Nebraska Kearney shots didn't drop as Sioux Falls hung on for a 1-0-win Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

In the early game, Northwestern Oklahoma State and Black Hills State (S.D.) fought to a scoreless draw. On Friday, UNK beat BHSU by a 1-0 score with NWOSU doing the same against USF.

UNK (1-3-0) had more shots, corners and possession of the ball than the Cougars (2-1-0) but couldn't crack the code. With 18 minutes left, All-Region forward Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.) saw her shot bang off the cross bar. Senior Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) was there for the putback, but her header hit the post. Barnes then scored from about 25 yards out a minute later, but officials deemed the Lopers offside.

With about 10 minutes left, freshman Shaeley Reichmuth (Omaha Skutt) came in and promptly found herself in front of the USF net. However, keeper Jost Morgan responded by recording one of her three saves on the day. In the first half, junior Riley Jensen (Bellevue East) headed a couple of corners wide of the goal with sophomore Daniella Iaquinta (Aurora, Colo.) having two shots as well.

"Unfortunate, unlucky and simple mistakes will be the definition whether or not we're in the (MIAA) playoffs," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "It was a great goal (Barnes) by us."

USF's goal came after they flipped the field with Ruby Reisdorfer running down the left side. Once past midfield, Van Zee made a cut to the left, received pass, went to the end line, made a move and scored.

"It was a simple lapse of moment communication," said Breton. "Those are mistakes that cause the outcome. The league race will be determined by who and who doesn't make those types of errors."

Finally, Loper keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) made two saves with Schimmer one of five field players to go all 90.

"I'm happy with the grown that we've made (this weekend) and the progress we're making in our understanding of the pieces. Our execution is not there and some of our reserves really need to step up and understand how to keep what we're doing going, rather than do what they want to do," said Breton.

UNK has just one game next weekend, a Sunday affair at Western Colorado (0-5-0). The Mountaineers also battle Cal State San Bernardino (1-2-1) on Friday.
