UNK Battles Top Competition in South Dakota

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams won 28 matches this past weekend at the Augustana Invitational in Sioux Falls.

The two-day event featured the host Vikings, Division I members North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska Omaha, and Creighton, D2 rival Minnesota State-Mankato and Division III Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.).

Senior Alex Jaulin (Australia) led the way by going 5-0, winning the Flight "E" in singles and Flight "C" doubles with junior Tom van den Dungen (Netherlands). Jaulin beat players from UNO, CU and GAC while rallying in the semifinals (3-6, 7-5, 10-6) to advance. He and van den Dungen received a first-round bye before winning 8-4 and 8-3 over pairs from UND and GAC.

Redshirt senior Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius X) was the other Loper to win, going 3-0 in Flight "D" singles. She took each match in straight sets and defeated competition from CU, Augie and USD. Next, junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland), freshman Illan Fuentes (France) and sophomore Jasmine Ben Aba (Tunisia) were runners up in Flight "C", Flight "D" and Flight "F" singles. Finally, junior Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and freshman Patricija Cechanaviciute (Lithuania) were both third in their singles flights.

The Loper women head to ITA Central Regionals Sept. 19-21 in Edmond with the men off until their regional meet Sept. 26-28 in Topeka.
