Hornets Strike Early to Take MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The Emporia State Hornets converted two rebound goals in the first half to down Nebraska Kearney, 3-1, Friday afternoon in Kansas.

This was the MIAA opener for both with the Hornets moving to 4-2-1 on the young season and to 4-1-0 at home with the Lopers dropping to 2-3-2.

Near the 12-minute mark, keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) launched a free kick toward midfield. The Hornets headed the ball back to the UNK end line where they won a battle for the ball and sent it towards the box. While Bovaird stopped the first shot, she couldn't save one taken by junior Avery Zimmeran. Right before half, Bovaird kept a free kick on the ground with E-State intercepting a Loper pass soon after. The counter led to Bovaird stopping a shot by junior Mia Garza, but English sophomore Amy Paver was there for the put back.

Omaha junior Rylie Washington added the other E-State goal, a shot from the right wing that found the far corner of the Loper goal in the 31st minute. UNK outshot ESU after the break, 7-3, with the Hornets having six of the game's seven corners.

Next, freshman Vanna Reitsma (Papillion) scored her team-leading third goal of the year with just 14 seconds left after the Lopers forced a turnover. Finally, Bovaird and freshman Maddie King (Arvada, Colo.) combined for six saves with junior Daniella Iaquinta (Aurora, Colo.), sophomore Danija Walker (Akron, Ohio) and freshman Bella Spadavecchia (Greenville, S.C.) combining for seven shots. 

The Blue & Gold head to Claremore, Okla., on Sunday afternoon to face the Rogers State Hillcats. RSU (2-1-2) hosted Fort Hays State on Friday night.
