Tobey's Big Throw Highlights Charlie Foster

Kearney, Neb. - Nebraska-Kearney thrower Dane Tobey shattered the meet, arena and school record in the shot put to highlight the 2010 Charlie Foster Classic Saturday afternoon in Cushing Coliseum.

The non-team scoring meet included Fort Hays State, York, Barton County C.C., Pratt C.C. and Colby C.C. along with a slew of unattached entries.

Tobey (Waco), a four-time All-American, won the shot with a big throw of 61-9. That is the second best effort in Division II this year, trailing only a toss of 62-6.75 by Ashland (Ohio) junior Kevin Roberts.

Tobey held the meet record (60-3.75), set in Jan. 2008, during his redshirt year while UNL grad Kevin Coleman set the arena record (61-7) back in 1996. Finally, Lance Pfeiffer held the school mark at 61-2.75 (Feb. 2007).

Other highlights included Grand Island senior Nick Theis provisionally qualifying in the weight throw (57-7.50), an event he finished 5th overall. Colorado Springs senior Rich Mourer was runner up (59-11).

Improving his standing on the national list was redshirt freshman Marty Molina, who placed 2nd in the triple jump (49-1). That leap ties for 4th best in D2 so far this indoor season.

Also for the UNK men, Gothenburg sophomore Alex Paul won at 200 meters (22.90) & 400 (49.82) meters, Grand Island sophomore Brandon Wissing set a meet record at 1,000 meters (2:34.91) and Bellevue freshman Simon Falcon won at 5,000 meters (16:26.85).

Leading the Loper women today was Sidney junior Jessie Golden who put her name on the national list in the 60 hurdles thanks to an 8.99 in the finals. She placed 2nd to Hays' Kelsey Martin (8.92).

Also adding her name to the national list this week was Grand Island senior Kiley Peterson in the shot put. She placed 3rd with a throw of 44-1.50.

Finally, Sargent senior Tracie Chanady (53-3.50) and Franklin senior Sam Murphy (51-9) went 1-2 in the weight throw with Murphy also being 2nd in the shot (45-6.25), Pleasanton freshman Kristi Bauer was runner up in the high jump (5-5.75) and Dickens sophomore Brooke Harris won the 1,000 meter run by 23 seconds (3:00.80).
