Kearney, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Kearney soccer scored three goals in each half to beat Colorado-Colorado Springs,
6-2, Friday evening at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
UNK, scoring the most goals in school history for a single game, improves to 6-5 and 3-4 in conference play while the Mountain Lions fall to 6-4 and 2-4 in the RMAC.
In two meetings last season, UCCS beat the Lopers 1-0 in Kearney and 5-0 in Colorado.
With the victory, Loper head coach Mike Munch now has 150 wins in his career. Munch is in 14th season as a collegiate head soccer coach. In his second season in Kearney, the Texas native has won 116 games at North Florida, 27 at Texas A & M -Commerce and seven at UNK.
The Lopers scored its first of three goals at the five minute mark, thanks to a Mountain Lion defender, who kicked the ball into her own net after defending a corner kick.
Three minutes later, UNK scored again off of a corner taken by true freshman
Raliegh Mercer (Centennial, Colo). The Lopers third and final goal of the half was scored at the 16 minute mark when Mercer passed the ball to another true freshman in
Becka Talcott (Denver, Colo.).
The team's leading scorer on the season, Talcott put the ball in the back of the net when the UCCS goalie misplayed the ball.
The Mountain Lions got on the scoreboard right before halftime when Julia Saenz took a shot from about ten yards out that sailed over the head of keeper Vanessa Leeper (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
UNK kept up right where it left off by scoring a fourth goal at the 53 minute mark as Mercer scored another goal on a rebound shot. Four minutes later, UCCS defender Kati Barbari headed the ball into her own net
The game's last goals off came via penalty kicks. Kearney senior
Talisha Krason scored at 61:29 and then Saenz tallied her second goal of the night at 81:53.
For the game, each team had 12 shots with the UNK taking two more corners, 5-3.
UNK returns to action on Sunday afternoon against New Mexico Highlands.
