Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney men's tennis team won four close matches to roll past Nebraska-Omaha,
8-1, Thursday evening at Harvey Park in Kearney.
UNK improves to 8-4 while the second-year Mavericks drop to 4-3. Earlier this season, the Lopers beat UNO in Omaha by a 6-3 score.
Today, the Lopers led 2-1 after doubles play. Sophomore
Josh Raymond and freshman
John Steinke won 8-5 in the No. 1 spot, avenging a 9-8 loss to UNO's Drew Mercier and Chase Petersen.
Raymond (Elkhorn) also turned the tables at No. 1 singles as he rallied past Mericer (4-6, 6-2, 10-5). In the dual earlier this year, Mercier swept Raymond (6-1, 6-3).
At No. 5 singles, freshman
Kyle Conzemius (Lincoln Pius X) not only improved to 8-0 but he won another match via super tie breaker. Now 6-0 in three set matches, he got past John McQuistan (3-6, 6-3, 10-5).
Also needing another set to win was senior
Aaron Angst in the sixth spot (6-3, 0-6, 10-8). Finally, Indonesian freshman
Revel Yehezkia didn't allow a point (6-0, 6-0) in winning at No. 2 singles.
UNK will play Minnesota State at Harmon Park tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday, the team will face Creighton at 10:00 a.m. Weather permitting, the Lopers will play Mesa State and Metro State Saturday in a pair of non-RMAC matches.
