UNK Falls to HU in Tourney Semis; NCAA Show Monday Night

Kearney, Neb. – The 35th-ranked Harding (Ark.) Bison won four singles matches to down 38th-ranked Nebraska Kearney, 4-1, in a MIAA/GAC Tournament semifinal match Thursday in Springfield, Mo.

The Bison (16-5), the top seed in the South Division, advances to Friday morning's finals against 11th-ranked Washburn. The North's top seed, WU got past 49th-ranked Norhtwest Missouri, 4-1, in the other semis dual.

UNK (16-7) came into this tournament as the second seed in the Central Region with HU third. Both teams will make NCAA Regionals with the Bison possibly hosting the Lopers May 11 or 12 in Searcy, Ark.; the NCAA field is announced May 4 (Mon.) at 7 p.m. Central on ncaa.com.

Last year, the Lopers lost to the Bison 6-1 during the regular season and 4-0 in the first round of the MIAA/GAC Tournament. To avenge those setbacks, UNK took the doubles point today as seventh-ranked Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and Ivan Melnik (Germany) upset the third-ranked pair of Mikkelsen/Solorzano, 6-1. The Lopers then secured the doubles point thanks to a 6-3 victory by junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) and freshman Cesare Carpano (Italy) at three.

However, Carpano, at five, took his first set in singles but the rest of the Lopers fell behind 1-0. Nationally ranked Solorzano eventually won at one (-2, -4) and then regionally-ranked De La Salas (-2, -1) did the same at two to give HU the lead for good. Finally, HU got straight set wins at six (-3, -4) and three (-2, -5) to clinch. Carpano was up 6-5 in set two with Ilan Fuentes (France) winning his second set and up 1-0 in the third.
