Kearney, Neb. - Nebraska-Kearney sophomore
Sara Wissing recorded a couple of late birdies to finish fifth at the NCAA Central Regional in Lake City, Minn.
The 54-hole tournament was played at the par 72 The Jewel. The top three teams, along with the top three individuals not from one of those three teams, advance to the NCAA Division II Championships May 12-15 in Mesa, Ariz. (Longbow Golf Club).
Shooting a three-day total of 238 (80-76-82), Wissing earned one of the three NCAA spots by rallying late.
After being nine over through 12 holes, the Hastings High graduate parred three straight holes before recording birdies on the par 5 16th and the par 4 17th. She did triple bogey the par 5 18th but that didn't cost her in the end.
Jill Preeshl of Upper Iowa took the first NCAA spot by earning medalist honors with a 233 (80-79-74). Teammate McKenzie Holthaus earned the third and last NCAA individual spot by tying for sixth with a 239. The closest person to Wissing and Holthaus was Molly Noster of Concordia-St. Paul (242).
Augustana won the team race (972) and will head to Arizona along with RMAC-member Western New Mexico (979) and Minnesota State (984).
Wissing joins Canadian Carla Dobchuck and Cairo native Jenny Deines as Loper women to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Wissing is used to playing in Arizona as the last two RMAC Spring Championships have been held in suburban Phoenix.
