Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis team won a series of close matches to sweep RMAC rival Metro State,
9-0 (men) and
5-4 (women), Thursday afternoon in Denver.
This RMAC dual was originally set for Kearney in late March but moved to Metro due to scheduling conflicts.
The Loper women (11-6, 4-0 RMAC), ranked sixth in the Central Region, saw Kearney freshman
Candace Green win in three sets at No. 6 singles (6-7, 6-1, 6-4) to secure the dual victory.
The Roadrunners came in ranked third in the region but fall to 7-8 (2-2 RMAC) on the spring.
Improving to 7-1 in singles, Green's win came after junior
Nickola Messbarger (Kearney Catholic H.S.) lost in thee sets at No. 4 singles. Freshman
Cassie Shaw (Flower Mound, Texas) did win in three sets (3-6, 7-6, 6-1) at No. 2 singles to give UNK a 4-3 lead at the time.
On the men's side, UNK (12-5, 4-0 RMAC) is ranked second in the region with Metro (8-6, 2-2 RMAC) fourth.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Josh Raymond (Elkhorn) and
Yeswanth Nadella (India) won 9-8 (7-3) and then Raymond beat 54th-ranked Lucio Cangiano (6-2, 2-6, 7-6) at No. 1 singles.
Three other Lopers won their singles matches in three sets as well.
UNK now heads to Pueblo, Colo., to face Western New Mexico and Mesa State on Friday.
