Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams finished up their fall schedule by each beating former RMAC rivals Colorado Christian, Colorado Mesa and Metro State this past weekend in Pueblo, Colo.
The Loper women dispatched of the
Cougars, 8-1, and
Mavericks, 7-2, but snuck past the
Roadrunners, 5-4. The men swept CCU and Metro and just got past CMU by a 5-4 score.
Against Metro, junior
Dominique Kropp (Kearney) and sophomore
Kelly Messbarger (Kearney Catholic) rallied from a 7-4 deficit at No. 3 doubles to win 9-7.
In the second spot, it was even closer as junior
Heather Connolly (Highland Village, Texas) and sophomore
Kristin Weems (Arlington, Texas) won 9-8 (5).
Finally, the top doubles team of juniors
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and
Britni Norfolk (Brashear, Mo.) posted an 8-3 victory. Gunawan (No. 1) and Weems (No. 2) won their singles matches in straight sets to give the Lopers the match.
The CCU dual featured a 9-7 win by Weems and Connolly with Kropp (10-7) and Connolly (10-6) each taking the third set in singles.
To beat Mesa, the men got a key 9-7 win by the No. 3 doubles team of sophomore
Jack Nicholson (England) and freshman
Fletcher Sheridan (Georgetown, Texas).
UNK won the other two doubles matches, and at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, to claim victory. Mesa did score two of their points thanks to three-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
The Metro match was closer than the score indicated as the Lopers won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and went 4-0 in singles matches that went to a third set. That included senior
John Steinke's 13-11 victory over Adrien Delvaux.
