Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis team returned from Spring Break to both sweep former RMAC rival Colorado Mesa Monday afternoon in Grand Island.
The Loper women improve to 13-3 while the UNK men are now 10-7. Both Kearney squads are currently ranked seventh in the ITA's Central Region rankings.
To beat Mesa for a second straight time this season, the women needed to rally from a 2-1 deficit. CMU got the lead thanks to narrow wins of 8-5 (No. 2) and 9-7 (No. 3) in doubles.
UNK rolled in singles, led by junior
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) not allowing a point in winning in the top spot to be at 14-1 for the year.
In the third spot, Missouri junior
Britni Norfolk won thanks to a 10-5 decision in the third set with Kearney sophomore
Tealyn Trimble taking her third set at No.6 singles by a 10-4 score.
On the men's side, UNK swept all three doubles matches but five of the six singles matches went to three sets. The Lopers took four of them, including Grand Island senior
John Steinke rebounding from a 6-0 first set loss to win 6-4 and 10-8 in the second spot.
The Loper men are scheduled to play at Hastings College on Tuesday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) with the women hosting MIAA rival Northeastern State Friday afternoon. That dual will likely take part at Harmon Park and begins at 1:00 p.m.
