Tennis Goes 3-1 on Tough Road Trip

Yeswanth Nadella
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams went 3-1 on a key road trip to St. Cloud State and Augustana this past weekend.

On Sunday, both Lopers teams swept the SCSU Huskies (9-0 women; 7-2 men) while, on Monday in South Dakota, the UNK men beat the Vikings, 6-0, while the women fell, 6-1.

Trying to make a push for NCAA regionals, the men (16-8) led each dual 3-0 before having some tough singles matches.

In the No. 1 position, junior Yeswanth Nadella (India) slipped past St. Cloud's Tyler Hjalmquist (6-2, 2-6, 10-3) and then got by Augie's Mitchell Barr (6-7, 6-2, 11-9) to be at 14-8 on the season.

Against SCSU, senior Arin Enge (Olathe, Kans.) managed a three-set win over Bryan La Rosa at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-7, 10-6). Due to time constraints, the Augustana dual wasn't played out in full as three singles matches went unfinished.

Not ranked in the NCAA regional rankings, the UNK women (18-6) blasted the Huskies but fell to the 5th-ranked Vikings (18-2).

In Minnesota, UNK's toughest battle came at No. 1 doubles where junior Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and Heather Connolly (Highland Village, Texas) managed an 8-6 victory.

Things were much tougher Monday afternoon as the Vikings led 2-1 after doubles. The Lopers No. 3 team of sophomores Kelly Messbarger (Kearney Catholic) and Tealyn Trimble (Kearney) managed an 8-6 win to keep UNK in it.

However, Augie swept No. 1-4 singles with the last two singles matches going unfinished.  In the third spot, Michelle Wadas slipped past Missouri junior Britni Norfolk (7-5, 3-6, 10-5) with Gunawan suffering only her second setback of the year, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Katie Jesperson.

To close out the regular season, the UNK women are scheduled to play at Fort Hays State on Wednesday with the men hosting Hastings. However, Winter Storm Yogi will likely change those plans.
