Kearney, Neb. –The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams wrapped up a busy weekend by both beating Emporia State and splitting with Washburn this weekend in Kansas.
The Loper women are now 17-5 (6-4) while the men are 14-8 (2-4).
In the first NCAA region rankings of the spring, the UNK women weren't in the Central's top six. Kearney likely will be now after dominating sixth-ranked Emporia State,
8-1, and defeating Washburn
, 6-3.
Against the Hornets, UNK took all three doubles matches fairly easily and then won five of the six singles matches. At the top and bottom of the lineup, junior
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) and sophomore
Tealyn Trimble (Kearney) each won a third-set tie breaker to win their match.
On Sunday in Topeka, the Lopers had to rally from a rare doubles deficit as the Lady Blues won 9-7 and 8-5 in the top two positions.
However, UNK won five singles matches in straight sets, including Gunawan not allowing a single point. She is now 20-1 and won three matches last week by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
The Loper men also had to come from behind for a win as the Hornets led 2-1 after doubles thanks to wins of 9-7 (No. 1) and 9-8 (No. 2).
To rally for a
6-3 win, UNK saw junior
Revel Yehezkia (Indonesia) and freshman Dan Faria (Portugal) win third-set tiebreakers at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
The Ichabods, ranked third in the NCAA Central rankings, won four close matches to beat the Lopers,
7-2, on Sunday. Kearney came in ranked sixth in the region.
In doubles, UNK lost 8-6 at both one and two and then fell in three sets at No. 4 and 6 singles. Faria, in the sixth spot, lost a heart breaker to Dario Munoz-Poletti (6-2, 5-7, 14-12).
Junior
Yeswanth Nadella did record a solid individual victory as he bested Arek Kozaczuk (6-3, 2-6, 6-3).
Due to weather, UNK has rescheduled its home match with Hastings College from tonight to Wednesday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m.
