Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams both defeated the Quincy University Hawks in Illinois on Monday afternoon.
On Saturday, the 51st-ranked Loper men (8-3) fell to 49th-ranked Rockhurst,
5-4, in a match that was added to the schedule last week.
The UNK women (9-3), ranked seventh in the Central, followed up a sweep of Missouri Western State on Friday with a similar
9-0 win against a QU team that had won nine of its first 10 duals.
Allowing 11 total points in doubles, the Lopers took all six singles matches, having battles in the first and sixth spots in the lineup. Â
Regionally-ranked
Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) didn't allow a point in a first set win over Amy Kuhle. After a tough 7-6 (7-5) loss in set two, Gunawan took the team point with a 10-7 victory in the third set.
Five spots lower in the lineup, Arizona junior
Kari Emery beat Morgan McGinnis, 7-6 (7-1) and 6-1. Finally, Missouri senior
Britni Norfolk is now 9-3 after a 6-0, 6-0 win in the fifth spot.
On the men's side, UNK had to work hard for an
8-1 win over Quincy (6-6).
The regionally-ranked pair of
Neto Cacace (Brazil) and
Yeswanth Nadella (India) won 9-8 (10-5) at No. 1 doubles with Cacace taking his No. 2 singles match in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 10-7).
At No. 3 singles,
Egyptian freshman
Mohab El Zanaty won in three sets as well (4-6, 6-4, 10-1).
In Kansas City on Saturday morning, the RU Hawks (5-3) won four straight singles matches to clip the Lopers.
Freshman
Lucas Garces (Spain) lost a marathon match at No. 5 singles (6-7, 7-6, 6-2) as did junior
Jack Nicholson a spot lower in the lineup (1-6, 7-6, 6-3). Â
UNK starts a "Spring Break" trip later this week that'll take the team to Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee.
