Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams started off a three-match home stand by easily sweeping Concordia Tuesday evening at Harmon Park.
The Loper men are now 14-4 with the women improving to 15-6.
Ranked seventh in the Central Region, the men fittingly recorded their seventh
9-0 victory of the season. Three doubles teams gave up just three points with the Bulldogs (7-4) not fairing much better in singles, tallying only seven points.
Senior
Yeswanth Nadella (India) and junior
Jack Nicholson (England) played doubles for the first time this year and didn't surrender a game in the top spot. At No. 6 singles, Nicholson shut out his opponent, as did freshman
Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt) three spots higher.
On the women's side, eighth-ranked UNK
blanked an opponent for the 11th time in 2014. The Bulldogs (1-7), defaulting at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, finished with four points.
Sophomore
Paula Jimenez (Spain) and freshman
Renee Hoekstra (East Lansing, Mich.) improved to 8-2 after winning 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. In singles, Jimenez, senior
Britni Norfolk (Brashear, Mo.) and juniors
Kari Emery (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Kristin Weems (Arlington, Texas) won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Things get much tougher this weekend when Washburn (Fri.) and Emporia State (Sat.) come to town. The WU men are second in the region and 39th nationally while both Hornets squads are in the Central top 10.
