Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams both fell to the Drury University Panthers Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Mo.
Ranked 11th nationally, the DU men remained unbeaten (6-0) by winning two doubles and four singles matches,
6-3, against the 33rd-ranked Lopers (8-1). On the women's side, the 20th-ranked Panthers improved to 7-0 with a
9-0 victory over UNK, which falls to 8-1.
Sophomore
Justin Nguyen (Louisville, Colo.) and
Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt) won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles but DU's No. 2 squad managed an 8-6 victory against senior
Jack Nicholson (England) and freshman
Georges Wakim (Egypt).
In a matchup of nationally-ranked pairs, Drury's 18th-ranked Max Hepp and Jorge Nadal beat UNK's 2nd-ranked duo of freshman
Joey Richards (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and sophomore
Lucas Garces (Spain) by an 8-3 score.
Zanaty won his No. 5 singles matches in straight sets, 6-4 & 7-5, with Wakim doing the same one spot higher in the lineup, 6-4 & 6-4. Nicholson won the second set at No. 6 singles but dropped a third set tiebreaker, 10-5.
Drury won the other three singles matches in straight sets.
The Loper women got close to getting on the board but senior
Kari Emery (Tucson, Ariz.) and freshman
Emma Neil (Papillion-LaVista H.S.) lost 9-8 (3) at No. 3 doubles. UNK also lost 8-5 in the second spot.
Finally, Elkhorn sophomore
Emily Fink had the most successful singles showing for the Lopers, losing her first set 6-4.
The Loper men face Division I UNO Wednesday in Omaha with the women hosting MIAA foe Central Oklahoma on Saturday morning at Harmon Park.
