Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams split on Friday afternoon at Harmon Park, the men beating Hastings College,
7-2, and the women falling to No. 21 Northeastern State,
8-1.
Regionally-ranked, UNK (10-2, 1-1) was hoping to avenge last year's 5-1 NCAA Tournament loss to the RiverHawks (4-1, 1-0). However, a veteran NSU team swept doubles and won five singles matches in straight sets.
At No. 6 singles, Arizona senior
Kari Emery notched her ninth win of the year in style by coming back from a 1-0 deficit to take the last two sets by scores of 7-6 (7-5) and 14-12. An ace allowed her to cap the win and score UNK's only point.
Led by 2014 NAIA All-American McKay Inman, Hastings did pick up wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles. The 33rd-ranked Lopers (10-1) rolled in the other matches, winning four singles matches in straight sets and allowing just eight combined points at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Freshman
Aaron Reekie (Sugar Land, Texas) did have to battle to win at No. 5 singles (6-2, 2-6, 10-8) with senior
Jack Nicholson (England) and freshman
Georges Wakim (Egypt) winning 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
UNK heads to Missouri next weekend to face Missouri Western State (women) and Lindenwood (both teams). It's then on to the Deep South to face Delta State and Mississippi College.
