Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney men's and women's tennis teams finished up a Spring Break trip by beating the Mississippi College Choctaws Tuesday afternoon in Clinton, Miss.
UNK is now a combined 25-3 after the No. 33 men won
7-2 and the women came out on top by an
8-1 score. The Lopers were to have played the Delta State (Miss.) Fighting Okra on Sunday but that dual was rained out.
At No. 3 doubles, senior
Kari Emery (Tucson, Ariz.) and freshman
Emma Neil (Papillion) improved to 7-3 thanks to a hard fought 9-8 (1) decision. Emery then recoded UNK's fifth team point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. She and junior
Paula Jimenez (Spain) are tied for the team lead in singles wins with 12 a pierce.
Finally on the women's side, sophomore
Sthefani Rodriguez (Venezuela) won a third-set tie breaker in the second spot to record her 11tg singles win of the year (4-6, 6-1, 6-4).
In men's doubles, freshman
Joey Richards (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and senior
Jack Nicholson (England) played together for the first time and managed a 9-8 (4) win in the second position.
Next, sophomore
Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt) and
Justin Nguyen (Louisville, Colo.) also had a battle, taking their No. 3 doubles match by a 8-6 score. Finally, Richards, with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, secured the dual with El Zanaty now a perfect 13-0 in singles duals as he won 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth
spot in the line up.
