Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams swept the Washburn Ichabods,
6-3 (men) and
5-1 (women), Thursday evening in Topeka, Kan.
These MIAA duals were originally scheduled for April 5th but were pushed back due to weather. Today's weather was better but still a bit blustery.
This was a key win for the 21st-ranked Loper men (18-2, 3-2) as the 'Bods came in ranked 25th-nationally and sixth in the Central Region. With the loss, they are now 13-5 (2-2).
UNK managed to lead 2-1 after doubles but it wasn't easy as the Lopers came out on top 9-7 at No. 2 and 8-6 at No. 3. Kearney then took four of the six singles matches, sweeping No. 4-6. That included junior
Lucas Garces (Spain) winning a third set tie breaker to win in the sixth spot, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5.
On the women's side, UNK (17-4, 8-2) bested Washburn (8-11, 3-6) thanks to winning all three doubles matches. Senior
Paula Jimenez (Spain) and sophomore
Emma Neil (Papillion) were the most dominant, taking their No. 3 match by an 8-1 score.
Only No. 1-3 singles were completed with freshman Sherry Sun (China) and junior southpaw
Sthefani Rodriguez (Venezuela) both winning in three sets to secure the dual.
The Lopers remain on the road and face nationally-ranked Drury Saturday in Springfield, Mo.
