Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams dominated the Harding Bison,
9-0 (men) and
7-2 (women), Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Mo.
The 21st-ranked men are now 6-2 while the women, ranked fifth in the Central Region, improve to 4-3.
Harding hails from the Great American Conference (GAC) and Searcy, Ark. The Bison men (5-4) came in ranked 38th in Division II and seventh in the Central. However, they were no match for the Lopers.
UNK won three close doubles matches to take an insurmountable 3-0 lead. At the third spot, sophomore
Alvaro Arias and senior
Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt) posted a 9-7 victory. One of their HU foes was former Loper Neto Cacace.
At number four singles, sophomore
Pepe Balado (Spain) came back to beat Adria Abella (6-7, 6-4, 10-8). El Zanaty wrapped up a 4-0 weekend with a decisive win a spot higher in the lineup (6-1, 6-2) while Arias beat regionally-ranked Carlos Crisostomo in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).
On the women's side, UNK won all three doubles matches to give the Bison (4-2) its second loss of the year.
Senior
Sthefani Rodriguez (Venezuela) and sophomore Sherry Sun (China) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles with Sun then winning a tough match at number one singles over regionally-raked Piper Huey (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Next, sophomore
Camryn Parnell (Lee's Summit, Mo.) had a solid dual as she swept her number six singles match (6-0, 6-0) while teaming with freshman
Ana Royo (Spain) to win 8-2 at the top doubles spot. The win came over a regionally-ranked HU duo of Huey and Laura Golubic.
The men are now off until an April 15-16 road trip to Washburn and Emporia State. The women will host 10
th-ranked Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma next weekend at Harmon Park.
