Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams finished up their regular season this weekend with stops in Kansas City and Bolivar, Mo.
Both Loper squads fell to the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm,
5-3 (men) and
5-2 (women), on Thursday in K.C. with the men defeating the Ouachita Baptist Tigers,
6-1, Friday afternoon at Southwest Baptist.
The UNK women are now 12-10 and will be the fourth seed in next week's eight-team
MIAA Tournament in Lincoln. The Lopers, who'll face fifth-seed Northwest Missouri State Tuesday, are the host for an event that runs April 18-20 (Tues.-Thurs.).
The 29th-ranked Loper men (11-9) didn't qualify for the four-team MIAA tourney and also likely won't reach the NCAA Tournament this season.
On a more positive note, seniors
Mohab El Zanaty (Egypt),
Lucas Garces (Spain),
Justin Nguyen (Louisville, Colo.) each won either a singles or doubles match in a whipping of 39th-ranked OBU from the GAC (Great American Conf.).
Playing number one doubles for the third time this season, El Zanaty and Garces beat OBU's regionally-ranked pair of Moncada/Chab by an 8-5 score. One spot lower, Nguyen and sophomore
Georges Wakim (Egypt) won 8-6 to help UNK build a 3-0 lead.
Nguyen also rolled at number five singles (6-0, 6-3) with Wakim about to beat regional rival Lennart Lonneman (6-1, 5-4) before that match was called. Ranked sixth in the Central, Wakim ends on a three-match win streak after rallying for a win over SEOSU's Alberto Blesa (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) on Thursday. Blesa came in ranked 17th in the Central with Lonneman seventh.
While Wakim rallied against the 19th-ranked Storm, three other Lopers weren't as fortunate, each losing a three-set singles match. SEOSU also won 8-6 at number three doubles to pick up another key point.
Overall, Wakim (12), junior
Aaron Reekie (11) and Nguyen and Wakim (10 each) led UNK in singles wins this year with Nguyen and Wakim a solid 10-4 in doubles.
On the women's side, the 41st-ranked Storm led 2-1 after doubles and rallied for a three-set win at number six singles to win by three.
Freshman
Ana Royo (Spain) pushed her win streak to 13 in a row, sweeping the Central's 13th-ranked player, Anna Buiukian (6-2, 6-4). Royo and sophomore
Camryn Parnell (Lee's Summit, Mo.) also won at number two doubles, 8-6.
