Kearney, Neb. – Senior
Mohab El Zanaty became the winningest player in Nebraska-Kearney tennis history as the Lopers swept Lindenwood,
6-3 (men) and
7-2 (women), Sunday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.
Playing a dual for the third straight day, the 29th-ranked Loper men improve to 9-8 (1-4) while the women are now 11-9 (5-4).
Hailing from Cairo, Egypt, El Zanaty has been a four-year starter who has primarily played at number one/two doubles and number three singles during his Loper career. While he and partner
Alvaro Arias (Spain) fell in number one doubles today, he recorded a straight set singles victory (6-2, 6-1) to record win 149.
That bests the total of 148 William Jacome, a four-time RMAC (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conf.) Player of the Year, recorded during the mid-2000's. El Zanatay now has 78 singles wins and 71 double victories.
Also on the men's side today, Egyptian
Georges Wakim upset Filip Bogic (6-3, 6-1) at number one doubles. Both are among the top ranked players in the Central Region. Finally, Arias rallied to win at number four doubles over Michele Gaspari (3-6, 6-3, 6-0).
Trying to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive, the UNK women rolled past the Lions (9-13, 2-7). The number one doubles team of Sherry Sun (China) and
Sthefani Rodriguez (Venezuela) won 9-7 to help give UNK a 3-0 lead.
In singles, each match was decided in straight sets with junior
Amanda Alvarez (Spain) winning 6-0, 6-1 at number three and junior
Emma Neil (Papillion) victorious at number four by a 6-1, 6-1 score.
UNK's busy schedule continues with a dual at Truman State on Monday. That event was just recently scheduled.
