Broken Records & Career Bests Highlight First Twilight Meet

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt sophomore Luke Stuckey smashed his own school-record at 1,500 meters and redshirt freshman Brayden Sorensen tied the school-record in the high jump Saturday at the Loper Twilight #1 at Kearney High School.

The "Last Chance" meet began in the afternoon and wrapped up just before 9 p.m. A similar meet, weather permitting, will be held Sunday. The meets have entries from 25 different schools from around the area.

Stuckey (York H.S.) broke a four-year old mark in the 1,500 last weekend at the MIAA Championships. His 3:47.53 allowed him to place third and just edge Cole Wellnitz's mark of 3:47.64. Today he easily ran past those times with an NCAA Championship automatic effort of 3:44.24. Placing second to Pittsburg State's Mason Strader (3:43.86), Stuckey now ranks in the national top 10. He was aided by teammate Seth Simonson (Hastings) who served as a rabbit in the race.

Sorensen (Kearney H.S.) already had punched his ticket to Grand Valley State when he cleared 7-0.25 back in April. He just edged that height on his third and final attempt today (7-0.50). Teammate Montrez Jackson (Trenton, Fla.) went 7-0.50 in May 2019.

Several Lopers that were on the NCAA "bubble" improved their chances today by having career-best efforts. Utica veteran Tanner Barth was runner up in the shot with a career-best 58-3. That moves him up two places to sixth in school history while likely placing him in the national top 15. Next, Central City redshirt junior Andrew Schuller finished third in the discus with a career-best 174-2. He remains eighth in Loper lore and should move into the D2 top 16.

Finally on the men's side, Wallace redshirt freshman Micah Swedberg had a provisional and career-best time in the 400 (47.693) to finish second, Ainsworth redshirt freshman Ben Arens was second in the steeple (9:48.11) with Kansas sophomore Josh Bohlke cracking the UNK all-time top 10 in the javelin (7th/183-0).

Already in good shape to make the trip to Michigan, McCook redshirt junior Tiara Schmidt had a career-best heave of 51-1.50 to finish second in the shot. That should move her into the national top five. Taylor redshirt freshman Jordan Dockweiler (4th/48-4) also had a personal-best throw which ties her for seventh in school history. Also in the field, Kearney senior Anna Squiers had a career-best 157-4 to finish fifth in the discus. That'll move her slightly up the national list.

On the track, Iowa senior Maddie Bach was runner up in the 5,000 (19:08.50) with Imperial senior Destiny Reinke having a career-best 11:22.56 in the steeple. She came in third and remains fifth on the UNK all-time list.
