UNK Sweeps William Jewell & Colorado Mesa

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams dominated Wiliam Jewell (Mo.) and Colorado Mesa Friday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The Loper men (3-2) won by 6-1 (WJC) and 4-0 (CMU) scores with the women (3-0) sweeping the Cardinals, 7-0, and Mavericks, 4-0. Both squads host Rockhurst (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon.

Returning to action for the first time since the fall, the Loper women allowed just one point in doubles against the WJC Cards (1-1) while taking each singles match in straight sets. Both Masha Hatouka (Belarus) and Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Against the CMU Mavs (4-3) in the afternoon, UNK took the doubles points thanks to wins of 6-1 and 6-0 at two and three and then won at two, five and six singles. Bernthal again didn't allow a point at five with 49th-ranked Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) taking a third-set tie breaker, 6-3, to come out on top at number two. Finally, UNK was poised to win the other three singles matches.

The men managed 6-2 and 6-4 wins at one and three doubles against William Jewell (4-3) to grab a 1-0 lead. Three straight set wins followed as well as freshman Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) taking his number three match in three sets with nationally-ranked Maksym Kulish (Ukraine) having a battle at one, 7-6, 7-5. Finally, the win over CMU (2-3) featured a pair of 6-3 wins in doubles with Kulish, Aussie sophomore Alex Jaulin (number six) and Dutch freshman Jip Mens (number two) winning in straight sets.
