Spring Break Trip Starts in Wichita Falls

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams went 2-2 this weekend in Wichita Falls, Texas, as the 26th-ranked women beat Texas-Tyler, 4-3, and 18th-ranked Cameron (Okla.), 4-0, while the 40th-ranked men lost to ninth-ranked UTT, 6-1, and CU, 4-1.

The "Spring Break" trip was supposed to start Friday against weekend host Midwestern State but that dual was canceled due to rain.

The women (7-3) were pushed by the Tyler Patriots but the Lopers took the doubles point and won three singles matches in straight sets. Senior Melisa Becerra (Colombia) had a resounding 6-0, 6-1 at four and after a 6-2 decision at two doubles playing with junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar). Eighth-ranked senior Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) clinched the dual with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at three.

The CU Aggies lost by just a 4-3 score to fifth-ranked Washburn but was no match for UNK. The Lopers allowed just four combined points at two and three doubles and then rallied at two and three singles to take the dual. Zamorano had a straight sets win at four (7-5, 6-4) with Becerra (1-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Ranaivo (2-6, 6-2, 7-5) both rallying.

On the men's side against UTT, UNK (7-4) saw graduate Adam Palecek (Czechia) rally to win at four singles (4-6, 7-5, 10-5) and freshmen Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) and graduate Aaron Osmond (Manchester, U.K.) won again at one doubles but the Pats won the rest of the matches.

The CU Aggies also took the doubles point on Sunday morning, but van den Dungen/Osmond still pushed their win streak to nine. Palecek picked up another win (6-4, 6-3) but CU won three singles sets by 7-6 scores to grab the momentum and dual.

Later this week, UNK is at Quachita (Ark.) Baptist, Southwest (Mo.) Baptist and Cowley (Kan.) County, a junior college power.
