UNK Sweeps Metro for the Second Time in 2024-25

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams swept Metro State, 6-1 (women) and 4-3 (men), for the second time this year Saturday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The Lopers were scheduled to dual Southwest Baptist this weekend as well, but the Bearcats couldn't make the trip up from Bolivar, Mo. Rockhurst replaced SBU and went against MSU-Denver on Friday.

Back in the fall in Colorado, the Loper women (5-1) swept the 'Runners (2-4) by a 7-0 score with the UNK men (4-6) slipping past the hosts, 4-3.

That same scenario almost played again as the Loper men needed to win three singles matches in three sets and sweep another to rally from a 1-0 hole. In the fall against the 'Runners (1-4), UNK won two singles matches in three sets and swept two others.

Sophomore Jip Mens (Netherlands) is now 9-1 in singles in the dual season after a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) decision at two. Junior Alex Jaulin (Australia) used a 7-6 (5) win in his second set to sweep at six with sophomores Tom van den Daugen (Netherlands) and Andy Brisdon (U.K.) winning at four and five, respectively, by taking the first and third sets. Finally, newcomer Ivan Melnik (German) and Jaulin managed a 6-2 win at two doubles.

Things were easier for the women as they allowed just six combined points in doubles and swept two through five singles. Senior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) won 6-1, 6-0 at four with redshirt junior Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) winning in the sixth spot by a 6-2, 6-1 margin.

UNK remains home once again next weekend to face Rockhurst and Colorado Mesa. The Lopers and Mavericks also met last fall in Colorado.
