Vikings Take Super Bowl Sunday Duals

Kearney, Neb. – The Augustana Vikings tennis teams beat Nebraska Kearney, 4-1 (women) and 4-3 (men), Sunday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The 13th-ranked women (3-1) got off to a good start as senior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and sophomore Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) won 6-2 at one doubles with senior Masha Hatouka (Belarus) and Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) winning by the same score at two. Three doubles remained unfinished tied at five.

Augie (3-0) has now won 10 consecutive duals over the Lopers as they took four singles matches in straight sets. Both Hatouka (six) and Ranaivo (two) had their matches tied through two sets, but each went unfinished.

The UNK men fall to 1-3 in duals decided by a 4-3 score as the Vikings (3-1) won four singles matches in three sets.

Sophomore Jip Mens (Netherlands) continues a hot start to the spring semester as he won in three sets at two singles (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) and teamed with sophomore Andy Brisdon (U.K.) to roll at two doubles, 6-1. Junior Alex Jaulin (Australia) also went 2-0 on the day, winning in straight sets at six singles and 6-0 at three doubles with freshman Ivan Melnik (Germany). However, Augie overcame a 1-0 deficit by rallying at three and five singles and taking the first set at four, 7-6 (5).

On Tuesday night, the Loper men (3-5) are at Creighton and then welcome in Southwest Baptist and Metro State next weekend. The UNK women will battle SBU and MSU Denver as well.
