Road Wins in Wichita

Kearney, Neb. – The nationally-ranked Nebraska Kearney tennis teams swept Newman, 6-1 (women) and 5-2 (men), Friday afternoon in Wichita.

The now 23rd-ranked women (17-4, 7-1) have a chance to grab a piece of the 2025 MIAA regular season title. They need to beat Central Oklahoma (9-5, 5-2) on Saturday to tie Washburn and Northwest Missouri for a second straight crown. Earlier this year, UNK lost to WU and beat NW while the 'Cats recently defeated the 'Bods.

On the men's side, the 41st-ranked Lopers (11-13, 2-3) secured a spot in next week's league tournament with a close win over the Jets (6-11, 1-4). This year's event will be in Springfield, Mo., and includes the North Division's top four teams as well as the South's top four squads. UNK and Emporia both tied for third in the North with NU and Augustana a game back.

The Loper women had to work hard to get past a pesky Jets squad (7-13, 2-6). NU won at three doubles with UNK having to win three singles matches in three sets to secure another dual.

No. 15 Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) rallied past 58th-ranked Dana Issavayeva (4-6, -6, -2) in the top spot with sophomore Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) rolling in the third set (-3, 3-6, -0) to win at four. Next, redshirt junior Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) closed the dual with a win at six (2-6, -3, 10-5). Finally, 31st-ranked senior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) tied the school record for career singles wins (87) with a straight set decision at two. Vanessa Gunawan ('14) also won 87 in her UNK tenure.

The Newman men won the doubles point with UNK rallying thanks to straight set wins at one, five and six singles with freshman Adrian Constantin (Romania) rallying at three; 6-7, -4, -2). In the top spot, 30th-ranked Jip Mens (Netherlands) easily bested 47th-ranekd Ali Mounir (-2, 6-3).

The men's exhibition dual with Collin (Texas) College has been canceled due to weather.
