Track Falls at Chadron But Puts Five Names on National List

Jena Isaacson
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney track & field team began its 2010-11 indoor season by having five provisional efforts this weekend in a rare dual at Chadron State.

The two-day dual began Friday with the heptathlon and pentathlon. The Loper men won 12 of 15 events with the Chadron women having 12 first places finishes to help the Eagles beat UNK, 145-120.

Putting their names on the NCAA list right out of the gates are juniors Jena Isaacson (pentathlon and long jump), Bryson Mahlberg (pentathlon), Marty Molina (triple jump) and Allen Osborn (55 hurdles) and sophomore Jackie Ziemke (shot put).
Mahlberg

Molina (Kearney) not only won the triple jump but his effort of 50-0.50 also broke the arena record and is just short of his own school record (50-1.25).

Molina also won the long jump (23-2.75), joining junior thrower Kyle Glidden (Benkelman) as Lopers to win twice this weekend.

Mahlberg (Elwood) dominated the pentathlon, winning six events to amass a school-record 4,758 points. Andrew Smith set the UNK standard by tallying 4,737 points in 2008.

Winning by over 500 points, Mahlberg was also well above the NCAA provisional point total of 4,600.

Running in his hometown, Osborn ran a 7.63 to place second to Karl McFarlane, a sophomore from Jamaica who ran an NCAA automatic time of 7.42.

For the Loper women, Isaacson (Holdrege) won three events over the two days to score 3,425 points, well above the 3,300 needed to be on the national list. Her total is also just 13 points shy of Cali Cordes' school record.

Isaascon's winning leap of 18-4.25 in heptathlon long jump also puts her name on the national long jump list.

Next, Ziemke (Waco) placed third in the shot with a toss of 44-0.75. In other throwing events, Glidden and Ogallala freshman Michael Thalken went 1-2 in both the shot and weight throw.

Glidden had efforts of 49-6.50 (shot) and 55-9.75 (weight throw).

Besides Isaacson, the only other Loper woman to place first was Broken Bow sophomore Shelby Hamilton. She ran 400 meters in 1:00.27 and also was third in the 200 (26.65)

On the track for the UNK men, sophomore Cornell Leffler (Lincoln Southeast) won the 200 (23.15) and came in second (51.14) to Gothenburg junior Alex Paul (51.04) at 400 meters. Also, Doniphan senior Cody Klein was victorious in the 55 dash (6.43).

The other individual winners for the Lopers were Broken Bow junior Austin Hendrickson in the pole vault (14-6), Gering sophomore Tyler Grasmick in the high jump (6-4.25) and Bertrand junior Matt Shipp in the 800 (1:55.03). Shipp also ran the anchor leg for the 4 x 400 relay team that had a first place time of 3:30.66.

UNK competes again Jan. 14-15 at the annual Holiday Inn Invite in Lincoln.
