Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior forward
Becka Talcott scored two minutes into the second overtime to lift the Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Missouri Western State Saturday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.
The goal keeps UNK in the race for the eight-team MIAA Tournament and also gives the Lopers (7-6-2, 2-5-2) a school-record seventh. The fourth-year program won six games in 2010.
With the setback, the Griffons slip to 4-8-1 (2-6-1).
Playing its second straight extra session game, UNK dominated from the opening kick. Taking 18 shots to Western's four, Kearney improved to 2-0-2 in overtime just after sophomore
Tara Knowlton (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) lined up for a corner kick in the 101st minute.
Her kick was headed by players from both teams and, taking a Loper bounce, went towards the Griffon goal. Western keeper Kelly Voigts (nine saves) blocked the shot but couldn't corral the loose ball and it went to a wide open Talcott (Denver, Colo.), who banged home her second game winner of the fall.
Talcott's first goal of the year came in an overtime win over Emporia State, 3-2, on September 28th. She scored UNK's only goal in a double overtime tie with NW Missouri State Thursday night.
"With the way we were playing, we figured we were going to win the game," said UNK coach
John Maessner. "We needed lucky bounce to go our way and that finally happened."
Ten minutes in, senior
Sara Chapman (Lincoln Northeast) headed in a crossing pass by sophomore Asthin Pawloski (Hastings). The play started when senior
Maggie McClure (Omaha Marian) moved the ball down the field and found Pawloski on the left wing.
Chapman played 20 games in the Lopers inaugural season but has been battled injuries since. This marked her first career goal.
Western had limited scoring chances all day but did find the net at 15:07 when K.C. Ramsell, from the left end line, sent a pass to the Loper net. The ball managed to sneak past the post and the Kearney defense to a waiting AJ Powers for her first goal of the year.
Overall, freshman Mckinzie Rieber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had a team-high four shots with freshman
Kristyn Otter (Millard North) taking three.
UNK is at Lindenwood and Truman State next weekend
