Sarah Talcott scored her second career goal and senior
Marissa Niday recorded her third shut out of the season to propel Nebraska-Kearney to a 1-0 win over Truman State Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo.
The Lopers (9-6-2, 4-5-2) not only win a third straight game but also have their first-ever 2-0 road trip. On Friday, UNK bested Lindenwood, 3-2.
Kearney is now tied with Missouri Southern State (4-4-2) for seventh in the MIAA heading into the final weekend of regular season play. The top eight teams qualify for the league tournament which begins October 30th on campus sites.
Against a Bulldogs (11-4-1, 7-3) squad that dropped its second straight home game, UNK was fouled in the 61st minute. That allowed Talcott (Denver, Colo.) to line up for a free kick from about 40 yards out.
She promptly banged it home for the game's only goal. Her other goal as a Loper came last September vs. Colorado Chrisitan.
Defensively, Niday (Fremont) stopped four of Truman's 16 shots. Five of those shots came in the last 20 minutes with each going wide of the Loper goal.
"A brilliant, very hard fought match by our girls. This is one of the biggest wins in our young history as a team," said UNK head coach John Maessner. "To beat a team like Truman, on the road, under those circumstances, where we had to win to keep our post season hopes alive, was absolutely huge. We are very proud of our squad as they gave everything they had"
True freshman Mckinzie Rieber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and
Montanna Hosterman (Papillion) each took two shots with Talcott and Niday each playing all 90 minutes.
Kearney concludes the regular season at Fort Hays State next weekend.
