Warm Start to the Spring

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's golf team began the spring semester by carding a 36-hole 614 to place runner up at the Southwest Minnesota Spring Invite Tuesday in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The two-day, seven-team event was held at the par 72 Wigwam Resort red course (5,806 yards). Faviola Gonzalez

UNK (310-304) came in ahead of region rivals SMSU, Bemidji State and Minnesota State-Moorhead as well as Rockhurst (Mo.) and Western New Mexico. The Lindenwood Lions paced the field with a 599 (301-298).

The Lopers final score is third lowest in school history with the second round 304 tied for fifth best in program lore. 

Sophomore Faviola Gonzalez (Cayey, Puerto Rico) tied for third with a 4-over par 148 (75-73). This effort is two strokes off her career best and tied for fourth lowest 36-hole score by a Loper. Brenda Dominguez of WNMU was the medalist thanks to an even par 144 (74-70).

Next for the Lopers Omaha junior Nia Station tied for sixth (8-over 152; 78-74), Doniphan senior Brandi Lemek came in 10th (10-over 154; 78-76), Oregon junior Kaitlyn Howe tied for 19th (161; 79-82) and Arizona freshman Paige Lucero tied for 24th (167; 86-81). Finally, playing as individuals, Utah senior Mikayla Frei tied for 21st (163; 83-80) with Hastings freshman Haylee O'Dey finishing 40th (180; 90-90).

UNK heads to Bolivar, Mo., in two weeks for the Midwest Intercollegiate Invite hosted by Central Missouri.
