A three-year participant in football and basketball and a four-year member of the track team, Arlo Grad played on four conference championships teams between 1945 and 1949. He taught and coached at Superior High School from 1949 to 1952 and was a coach and teacher at Riverside, California, school district for 33 years until he retired in 1985. Among the honors the Kearney native earned were the 1981 California H.S. Coach of the Year and the 1983 3-A Division All-Southern California High School Basketball Coach of the Year.

Prior to returning to Kearney, Arlo enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. Assigned to the 3rd Marine Division, 12th Marine Regiment, he saw combat action on the islands of Bougainville, Iwo Jima and Guam.
