When Don Ayers graduated in 1956, he had his name on 14 Nebraska College Conference track meet and eight schools records. He also won 14 NCC track medals in three years. Among his top performances were 9.7 in the 100 yard dash, 21.7 in the 200 and 23-8 ½ in the long jump. He teamed with Don Straney, Bob Miller and Milt Johnson to set the school record in the 880-yard relay with a time of 1:28.5, fourth fastest in the United States in 1955. In 1956, his senior year, Ayres ran the 100 meter dash in 10.5 to qualify for the Olympic Trials. Along with earning four letters in track, Ayres was a halfback on the Antelope football team two years.
