Tom Kruger competed in wrestling and football during his athletic years from 1974 to 1979. As a senior, Kruger was an All-American wrestler placing sixth in the national tournament. At that tournament, he won the prestigious Gorriaran Trophy for recording the greatest number of pins in the least amount of time. For his career he compiled a record of 52 wins and only eight losses. In football, Kruger played offensive guard and tackle. He was a member of the 1977 team that was ranked fourth in the country.
