Recognition: Coach

Joan Bailey was one of the pioneers of women’s athletics during her 34 years at UNK from 1962 to 1997.

Bailey started as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s swimming teams. In 1964, she was named head women’s swimming coach, the first women’s sport in KSC/UNK's modern era.

During one string, the Lopers won the Nebraska Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Association title six straight years. Her squad competed in the first national AIAW swimming championships for women. At the first NAIA women’s championships the Lopers finished fourth.

Also in the 1960’s, Bailey was instrumental in developing the first women’s collegiate athletic budget in the state and the first women’s athletic board in Nebraska.

In 1989, Bailey was named NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year. Bailey started the softball program and was head coach from 1966 to 1976.
