Gary Shubert was an All-American in both track and cross country during his career from 1958 to 1962. He earned four letters in both sports and was captain in both his senior year. In cross country, Shubert was seventh in 1959 and eighth in 1961 at the NAIA national meet. He was district champion in 1961. In track, he earned All-American honors by finishing fourth in the steeplechase in 1959 and second in 1961. That year he also finished eighth in the two-mile and was a member of the two-mile relay team that finished eighth. While running for coach Charlie Foster, the cross country team finished in the top eight all four years including a national runner-up finish in 1959. At the national meet, the track team finished fifth in 1959, sixth in 1960, and third in 1961.
