Clayton Scott was a two-time NAIA national two-mile champion winning the race in 1954 and 1955. In the 1955 race he set a school record of 9:28.4. In 1956 Scott finished second in the 5,000 meters, qualifying him for the Olympic trials. Scott won the NCC mile and two mile races all three years he competed for track coach Charlie Foster.
