Sharon Mullen Zavala of the Class of 1974 is widely recognized as one of the outstanding volleyball coaches in Nebraska. Entering the 2002 season, the Grand Island Central Catholic coach had completed a 561-110 record that included six state championship and four state runner-up trophies. She has taken her teams to the state tournament 18 years. She has been Nebraska Coaches Association Volleyball Coach of the Year four times , Grand Island’s KRGI Sportscasters Club Coach of the year  four  times, Grand Island Independent Coach of the Year twice and Lincoln Journal-Star State Girls Coach of the Year. In 1993, the Grand Island Independent named her Woman of the Year.
