J. Michael Sobieszczyk was the first 7-0 high jumper in Nebraska, a feat he accomplished when he won the NAIA Championships as a senior in 1971. In that meet he also placed fourth in the javelin. During the indoor meet his senior year, he won the national NAIA title. Sobieszczyk was also a member of the basketball and cross country teams. After graduation, he qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the decathlon four times- 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1984.
