Wayne Gappa was a three-year star as a defensive back for the Lopers from 1963 to 1965. He earned Nebraska College Conference all-conference honors in 1964 and 1965 and All-Nebraska and NAIA All- American honorable mention honors in 1965. During his three years, the Al Zikmund coached teams compile a 23-4 record and captured three conference championships. The 1963 team was ranked third nationally and played in a four-team NAIA playoff. The 1964 team was ranked 12th nationally. As a Kearney businessman, he has been a long-time supporter of UNK athletics.
