At the time of his graduation, Dr. Gary Smidt set the Kearney State career scoring record with 1,134 points. Smidt also lettered in football and tennis. He was a two-way starting back in football, leading the team in interceptions and setting a Kearney State record with an 80-yard punt return. He led the 1959 tennis team to the conference championship. In three years as a basketball starter, Smidt was a multi-sport star for the Antelopes from 1956 to 1959. In addition to leading the conference in scoring in basketball two years,
